Ravine Park Cemetery

Location
City: Sylvania
County: Lucas
State: Ohio

History
Sylvania's Ravine Park Cemetery is said to be haunted by the ghost of a woman who is unhappy because her parents couldn't decide which of her three husbands to bury her with.

A frustrating trip to Sylvania turned up a big cemetery, but it isn't called Ravine Park. I've since gotten better directions and will spend a night in Ravine Park sometime soon. Maybe the girl will show up.
Apparently she has for other people. I received the following account from a ghost hunter in NW Ohio:

{Story from www.forgottenoh.com}
My friends and I are doing investigations in Lucas County in the Toledo area. Just this previous evening on October fifth around ten in the evening my friends and I decided to go to Ravine Park Cemetery. It is located across from Flower Hospital, almost near the Toledo Memorial Cemetery. We witnessed the haunting of the lady tonight. There were no signs that said no trespassing and there are no gates so I pulled my car into the road that leads the cemetery. We then got out and started walking around the cemetery. We walked around for about twenty minutes without hearing or seeing anything. Suddenly one of my friends and I turned and looked toward the front of the cemetery and there was the ghost. She had dark hair and a white dress and seemed to be gliding in the front part of the cemetery. We quickly got back to the car and turned on my headlights and began driving, and she was nowhere to be seen. You could tell she was gliding, as there was no up and down motion of someone walking, and she went by so quickly. The Ravine Cemetery is haunted, and we will be returning again soon to investigate more.

Batavia Cemetery
Lucy Run Road

Location
City: Batavia
County: Clermont
State: Ohio

History
A figure in white often startles travellers on Lucy Run Road, dashing across the road to evaporate before their eyes at the gate to Batavia Cemetery. This is the story of who she is and where she came from.

The family of Charles Robinson set out for the west in 1806, first spending time in Kentucky, then settling for good in the fields of Clermont County, Ohio, building his family a log cabin alongside a sizable creek. Charles had several daughters. One of them, Lucy, was especially attractive and promising, and when she promptly became engaged at the proper age no one was surprised.

Then disaster struck. The fiancee rode to the Robinson cabin in a thunderstorm to tell her the bad news: he had met someone else, was in love with another woman. The engagement was off.

He rode off too quickly for the stunned Lucy, who mounted her horse and rode out into the storm to follow him. The rain was coming down in thick sheets, making visibility almost impossible, and somehow she missed the bridge and rode into the swollen creek. Thrown from her horse, she was swept away immediately and drowned in the muddy water.

From that time onward, the creek was known as Lucy's Run, and the road that runs alongside it Lucy Run Road. And Lucy has always been seen, running without a horse, across the road from the place where her family's homestead was to the gates of the cemetery where she is buried.

The Ridges Asylum Cemeteries

Location
City: Athens
County: Athens
State: Ohio

History
Depending on who you ask, there are either two or three asylum cemeteries at the Ridges. The lesser-known cemetery apparently stands "on a hill parallel to Dairy Lane." But the most famous one is at the rear corner of the asylum grounds. This is the only part of the Ridges still owned by the state Department of Mental Health.

Very few of the gravestones feature names. A couple have been replaced with better stones engraved with names and dates, but that only happens when someone's descendants bear the expense and have a stone put in. If you died on the state they gave you a small white stone with your patient number on it and nothing else. Hospital records tell who each number belonged to, which is why several of the unmarked stones are accompanied by metal veterans' plaques. There are a lot of Civil War veterans in the Ridges graveyard; when it was built there was an entire country full of shellshocked veterans. Due to missing records, the identities of the male patients with numbers 1 through 63 are lost to history. Male #64 and Female #1 were both interred in 1880.

In total there were roughly two thousand people interred in the Athens State Hospital burial grounds before 1972, when the burials ended with Female #847 and Male #1117. Since men and women were numbered separately, there are two gravestones for each number through 847. Apparently Ohio University also buried the cadavers used in its medical classes here, but whether or not they were assigned numbers I don't know. This is similar to the Columbus Mental Hospital cemeteries with their "SPECIMENS" stones.

The Ridges asylum cemetery is also definitely reputed to be haunted. Most of the stories center around the weird circle of graves which takes up one corner of an otherwise military-style tombstone layout. Maybe there was a center stone at one time, but now it's just a barely-distinguishable ring of graves. The legends say that witches use this as a circle of power (or something like that) to hold seances in. It turns out that the circle was probably created by pranksters years ago--at least that's OU's official opinion. There doesn't seem to be another feasable explanation.

Then there are the typical cemetery ghosts. There's even a really weird section with only a handful of graves on the other side of a little creek. There's a wooden bridge and, on the other side, three or four graves in the woods.

The Ridges' main asylum building is inaccessible now, but the cemetery is always there. It's a good and scary place to check out late at night. And if you feel adventurous you can always head right up the hill and across the driveway and take a look at the only abandoned building left on the property--the Tuberculosis Ward.

West State Street Cemetery

Location
City: Athens
County: Athens
State: Ohio

History
One of Athens' many ghost stories belongs to the cemetery on West State Street. This graveyard covers several hundred feet and contains stones dating all the way back to the early 1800s. Near the front gate there is a stone angel statue which commemorates the many unknown soldiers buried here. Legend has it that the statue sometimes moves and, more frequently, sheds tears.

The statue looks very sad, with its eyes downcast and its shoulders slumped. It's easy to see how a legend like this could get started, especially since the angel stands so close to the front and can be see just by driving by. As for real tears, I can't say; I visited in the daytime, in September 2002, and wasn't lucky enough to see anything happen.

Although the angel is the focal point of the ghost stories, people do say that the cemetery as a whole is haunted. It's littered with broken and unidentifiable stones, but of the ones that can be read some have interesting life stories printed on them.

It's definitely an interesting and creepy cemetery; I'd expect no less from Athens. From what I hear it's open all night, so if you want to check it out sometime I don't think it would be very difficult.

Athens Cemetery

Location
City: Athens
County: Athens
State: Ohio

History
Simms Cemetery in Athens has the distinction of being considered one of the most haunted places in the country. It is said to actually move, making it difficult to locate for the Ohio University students who search it out. My friend Dan, who goes to OU, says that the cemetery is just located behind another cemetery and is therefore harder to find.

Judge Simms, after whom the place is named, was--according to legend--once the judge and executioner for the area. After a sentence was given, it would be carried out at the Judge's home on Peach Ridge. Rope marks are still visible on the "hanging tree" in the cemetery.

Visitors to Simms Cemetery often report seeing strange shapes, especially the figure of Simms himself, who says two words to trespassers: "Get out!" Most people take his advice. Ghostly figures are also seen hanging from the tree on occasion.

Union Lake

Location
City: Johnstown
County: Licking
State: Ohio

History
The apparition of a young boy appears sometimes at sunset, floating just above the surface of Union Lake near Johnstown. He was particularly active in the 1960s, when he could be relied on to float from one end of the lake to the other on a regular basis, but he may still appear.

The boy lost his life in the relatively shallow lake because a local farmer used it as a dumping site. He threw a lot of leftover sections of metal fencing into the water, where they rusted and became a nuisance for fishermen, who lose lures there all the time. The nameless little boy decided to go swimming in the lake, got caught in the rusty fence, and drowned before his father could reach him. The distraught father, according to rumor, then killed himself in his car rather than carry the news to his wife.

Ever since, mysterious fogs have covered the surface of the water regardless of time of day or temperature. The fog will part in a straight line across the water. If you fish there after dark you're likely to hear a child's giggle at the other end of the lake, followed by a frantic splashing.

A less reliable haunting rumor involves a teenager who died when he wrecked his three-wheeler on a tree stump in the 1980s.

The Buxton Inn

Location
City: Granville
County: Licking
State: Ohio

History
The Buxton Inn in Granville is one of Ohio's best-known haunted places. Built in 1812by Orin Granger as a post office and stagecoach stop on the Columbus-Newark route, it is one of the oldest continuously operating inns in the state.
The ghosts of the Buxton Inn are almost exclusively those of former owners. Orin Granger himself appears sometimes as a ghostly man in blue who eats pies from the pantry.

Major Buxton, who operated the inn between 1865 and 1905, is often seen in a chair beside the dining room fireplace. People warming their hands at the fire have seen disembodied hands next to theirs.

Ethel "Bonnie" Bounell operated the Buxton Inn from 1934 to 1960. Known as the "blue lady," she tends to haunt rooms seven and nine. Room nine is also haunted by the ghostly cat whose picture decorates the sign out front.

The basement of the Buxton is another likely place to find some ghosts. It's where the team drivers slept when the building was first constructed, and today it's the site of numerous cold spots and strange noises. Footsteps are heard on the floorboards above, and doors open and close on their own.

From what I hear, the Buxton is fairly reasonable. You can view their official website at www.buxtoninn.com. And try to get room 7 or 9.

Nettle Lake

Location
City: Bridgewater Center
County: Williams
State: Ohio

History
The ghostly sound of an Indian drum can be heard at Nettle Lake just before a thunderstorm. According to legend, the drum belonged to Sam Coon, who used the big Indian drum to summon the spirits of dead chiefs, who would tell him where to find treasure. After he died of a fever his drum was found burst outward, as if something inside had gotten out.

I'd also like to note that spirit drumming is not the only thing to watch for at Nettle Lake. Depending on how much you've had to drink, you may or may not catch a sight of Nettie, Nettle Lake's resident sea monster. Descriptions of Nettie range from a tree stump or stone, all the way to an ox or a bear. She splashes the water close to the edge, or exposes more of herself further out.

Not especially aggressive or dangerous, but she does snag the occasional human being to take down to her lair for lunch. Philip Knight and his canoeing partner disappeared while crossing Nettle Lake together. So be careful, and be aware of what might live in the water beneath you.

History
This plant on Route 545 near Olivesburg has been closed down for years. When functional, they made cement blocks for use in railroad construction projects, and formed metal rods out of molten iron.

The ghost story here is a horrifying one. Sometime around World War Two, one of the chains on the large iron kettle broke and white-hot molten metal splashed onto five workers. They were so badly injured that they couldn't call for help and instead died slow deaths on the factory floor. When they were found, their bodies were immersed in solid iron.

Now, if you visit the old plant at night, you're likely to find yourself locked in. The spirits will talk to you and share some of the agony of their final moments with you.

Bloody Mary

Location
City: N/A
County: N/A
State: Ohio

History
Below the waters of Lake Erie around the Sandusky Bay lives an old, ugly hag by the name of Mary. Mary once fell in love with a young man from Huron. He, of course, was not attracted to her. Mary grew more obsessed with this man, and continued to pursue him despite his repeated rejections.

Mary soon turned to black witchcraft to win him over. First, she drew the figure of a pretty girl in the sand. She then stalked and kidnapped young women, taking them to her home where she killed them. To complete her grisly plan, Mary then selected the best body parts from each victim and sewed them together to form a perfect "doll".

Mary tried to use the life-like doll to attract the man. She was almost successful. After luring him on a pier, the man accidentally fell into the lake and drowned.

It is said that at night, Mary comes up from the bottom of her watery home and roams the shores of Lake Erie looking for new body parts to replace the rotting ones of her "doll." One variation of this legend states that when the night is stormy, she will creep around the houses along the lake, looking inside the windows for young women. When she finds a suitable candidate for the doll, she will knock three times on the girl's bedroom window. If the girl hears the noise and looks out the window into the face of "Bloody Mary," she will fall under the witch's spell and be taken away. Another version warns young women against going near the lake at night. If she happens upon Bloody Mary, the witch will drag her under the water.

As with crybaby bridge, the story of Bloody Mary is more urban legend than fact and has several variations. The most well-known versions overlap with that of Mary Worth and/or Candyman--her violent spirit will appear if you stand in front of a mirror and say "Bloody Mary" 13 times.

Still, this is the darkest, most unique version of the Bloody Mary legend and worth coverage as its own tale.

The woods at this state park are haunted by a woman who was supposedly killed by fanatical townspeople outside Ravenna. She was accused of being a witch and was killed by being "pressed"--a method which involves laying a wooden slab on the accused and adding stones bit by bit until the body breaks and is crushed beneath the weight. Fittingly, her grave is marked by a mound of stones.

Now the accused witch roams the woods at West Branch. She is sighted from time to time, always clad in a flowing black gown and a black scarf. Over the years the stones on her grave have been scattered, but a layer still remains which cannot be disturbed.

A separate story is attached to the witch's grave, which once had the "As you are now so once was I," poem engraved on it. It used to be a rite of passage for local kids to drive out to the "Witch's Graveyard" at night and chip off a piece of the stone to take home as a souvenir. According to the story, a group went one night, and all but one of them took a piece of the stone. On their way home they died in a car accident at the intersection of 14 and 59--all but the one kid who protested and refused to take a piece of the stone. Ever since then, bad luck has followed anyone who dares to desecrate the witch's graveyard.

Paul Weeks Litchfield 1875-1959
In 1900 Paul W. Litchfield came to Akron from Boston, assuming the role of superintendent of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. In 1926 he became president of the company, relinquishing this role in 1940 but remaining as chairman of the board and chief executive officer.

Litchfield felt strongly about the value of education, regarding it as a primary force in the lives of individuals. He was one of the first technically-trained, college-graduated men to enter the rubber industry. He established the Goodyear Training Center and was an active, ardent supporter of Akron Public Schools and the University of Akron.

Directions
To reach Mudhouse Mansion, you should take Route 22 east out of Lancaster to Lake Road. Go left on Lake Road, which winds around for about a mile, and then turn left onto Mud House Road. You'll be able to see the place off to the right if the corn is low and it's daytime. Otherwise you'll have to find the gated-off driveway.

History
Mudhouse Mansion is an abandoned house located in Fairfield County, just east of Lancaster, at 4730 Mud House Road. It's a very imposing, impressive place built into a hill, with a number of outbuildings surrounding it. With its empty windows and isolated location, Mudhouse Mansion practically screams haunted house. And, appropriately enough, it is one.

So why is Mudhouse haunted? If you believe the local tales, you can take your pick. One legend tells of a government official who lived there after the Civil War and still kept slaves (in the North, even), locking them in one of the outbuildings at night. One night the slave dug his way out, entered the house, and slaughtered the entire family. Some say a more modern family was massacred there; their ghosts haunt the house. Others say it's home to the original "Bloody Mary," the ghost lady who's supposed to appear in your mirror if you say her name three or five or ten or a hundred times. Some kids in Lancaster grew up calling it the House of Mary. According to traditional American folklore, Bloody Mary's childred were killed, either by her husband or by her, and she's pissed about it. This one is tough to believe, since Bloody Mary is known all over the world, and it's pretty much a given that she never existed in the first place, much less in Fairfield County, Ohio. Then again, it's all just folklore, so you can believe just about anything you want to about Mudhouse.
